Obverse

Lady Liberty is depicted on the obverse of the Pre-33 Liberty Gold Eagle Coin. The left-profile image of Liberty shows her with a coronet crown, surrounded by 13 stars representing the original colonies, with the date of the coin at the bottom.

Reverse

The reverse of the $10 Liberty Gold Eagle features the heraldic eagle, a powerful American symbol. The bald eagle is shown with the US national shield and is holding arrows of war and an olive branch of peace. The Type II coins also include the national motto.

History

The Liberty Gold Eagle was the second design used on the $10 Gold Eagle coins. Created by Christian Gobrecht, the 3rd Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, the design was used from 1838 to 1907, with a minor update to the reverse. The original reverse, known as Type I (1838-1866), lacked the national motto, while Type II (1866-1907) included a banner with the motto.
