Obverse

On the obverse, the coin features a bust of Lady Liberty, designed by Gobrecht. This design is inspired by Greek and Roman art, showcasing Liberty in left-profile relief with a coronet crown and a ring of 13 stars.

Reverse

The reverse side features a heraldic eagle, also designed by Gobrecht. The eagle, shown with the US national shield, holds arrows and an olive branch, symbolizing war and peace. The Liberty Eagle has Type I and Type II reverse variants; Type I lacks the national motto, while Type II includes it, introduced in 1866.

History

The Liberty Gold Eagle represents the second design of the $10 US Gold Eagle Coin series. While the $10 Gold Eagle was minted from 1794 to 1933, the Liberty design was the most enduring, struck for 70 years from 1838 to 1907. This classic design was created by Christian Gobrecht, who served as the 3rd Chief Engraver of the United States Mint.
