History

The Liberty Gold Double Eagle was designed by Chief Engraver James B. Longacre and was introduced to circulation in 1850, with the initial proof coins struck in 1849. It quickly became a favored coin in U.S. commerce, with the Liberty Double Eagle remaining in production until 1907.
