Obverse
On the obverse of the 1878-S Morgan Dollar, youll find a depiction of Lady Liberty in left-profile relief. Morgan is said to have used Anna Willes Williams as the inspiration for this iconic portrait. Liberty is shown wearing a Phrygian cap and a laurel wreath, with a coronet crown on her head, surrounded by a ring of 13 stars.
Reverse
On the reverse side of the 1878-S Morgan Silver Dollar is the heraldic eagle. Morgans rendition of the eagle does not feature a U.S. national shield but shows the American bald eagle in a front-facing position with its wings spread. The eagles talons hold arrows representing war in one and an olive branch symbolizing peace in the other.
History
The 1878 release of the Morgan Silver Dollar was significant as it marked the start of this iconic series. This followed the discontinuation of the Seated Liberty Dollar in 1873, ending free silver coining in the U.S. After a five-year pause, the Morgan Silver Dollar was introduced, featuring the artwork of George T. Morgan, who was appointed as Assistant Engraver at the U.S. Mint in the same year.
