Obverse

The obverse side of the 1885-O Morgan Dollar showcases Lady Liberty in left-profile relief. Liberty is shown wearing a Phrygian cap, a laurel wreath, and a coronet inscribed with the word Liberty. The design, created by George T. Morgan, is said to be modeled after Anna Willes Williams, a teacher from Philadelphia. Surrounding Liberty are 13 stars symbolizing the original colonies.

Reverse

On the reverse of the 1885-O Morgan Silver Dollar, youll find a front-facing image of the American bald eagle with its wings spread wide. The eagle holds arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other, symbolizing both war and peace. This design by George T. Morgan is unique in that it does not feature the typical national shield in front of the eagle.

History

In 1885, the United States Mint struck Morgan Silver Dollars at four different mints: Philadelphia, New Orleans, San Francisco, and Carson City. The New Orleans Mint contributed 9.185 million coins to the overall production, making it the second-highest mintage that year. The coins composition includes 90% silver and 10% copper, making it both historically significant and valuable for its silver content.
