Obverse

The obverse of the 1887 Morgan Silver Dollar features a left-profile image of Lady Liberty, a design based on Anna Willes Williams. Lady Liberty is adorned with a Phrygian cap, a laurel wreath, and a coronet, with 13 stars surrounding her image.

Reverse

On the reverse side of the coin, there is a heraldic eagle designed by Morgan. This eagle is depicted in a front-facing pose with wings spread wide, holding an olive branch and arrows to symbolize both peace and war. The design is distinct for lacking the national shield found in other coin designs of the time.

History

The total mintage of the 1887 Morgan Silver Dollar exceeded 33 million coins. The Philadelphia Mint struck 20.29 million coins, while the New Orleans Mint contributed 11.55 million and the San Francisco Mint struck 1.77 million coins. The Carson City Mint did not produce any Morgan Dollars in 1887.
