Obverse

On the obverse, the 1889 Morgan Silver Dollar displays George T. Morgans renowned depiction of Lady Liberty. She is shown in left-profile relief, wearing a Phrygian cap, a laurel wreath, and a coronet crown, symbolizing freedom and honor.

Reverse

The reverse of the 1889 Morgan Dollar features Morgans version of the heraldic eagle. This bald eagle, portrayed without a national shield, clutches arrows and an olive branch, representing both the countrys readiness for conflict and its hope for peace.

History

If not for the 1921 revival of silver dollar coining in the United States and the one-time issuance of Morgan Dollars that year, the 1889 Morgan Dollar would have held the record for the highest mintage in a single year at one mint. The Philadelphia Mint struck 21,726,000 Morgan Dollars in 1889, a record that remained until 1921 when the Philadelphia Mint struck 44,690,000 coins during the resurgence of silver dollar production.
