Obverse

The obverse of the 1896 Morgan Dollar showcases a left-facing portrait of Lady Liberty. Designed by George T. Morgan, she wears a Phrygian cap that symbolizes liberty, along with a laurel wreath and a coronet crown that represent victory and honor.

Reverse

On the reverse side of the 1896 Morgan Silver Dollar is the heraldic eagle, also designed by Morgan. This eagle is unique because it doesnt feature the national shield. Instead, it holds arrows symbolizing strength and an olive branch representing peace.

History

In 1896, the Philadelphia Mint struck the highest number of Morgan Silver Dollars compared to other U.S. Mints that year. The Philadelphia Mint produced 9,976,000 coins, which was more than the combined total from the San Francisco and New Orleans Mints. San Francisco struck 5 million coins, and New Orleans produced 4.9 million coins.
