Obverse
On the obverse side, the 1902-O Morgan Dollar features the image of Lady Liberty, as designed by George T. Morgan. Liberty is shown in left-profile relief, wearing a Phrygian cap, a coronet crown, and a laurel wreath. The field surrounding her includes 13 stars and the date.
Reverse
The reverse of the 1902-O Morgan Silver Dollar displays the heraldic eagle. This design features the American bald eagle in a front-facing view, with its wings spread and its talons clutching arrows representing war and an olive branch symbolizing peace.
History
The New Orleans Mint has a rich history in the production of Morgan Silver Dollars. The series was struck annually from 1878 to 1904, and following a 17-year gap in the minting of silver dollars, the Morgan Dollar returned for one year in 1921. The New Orleans Mint issued coins every year from 1879 to 1904, having reopened after the Civil War and Reconstruction in 1879, but it closed in 1909. As a result, it did not mint coins in 1878 or 1921.
