Obverse

On the obverse of the 1935 Peace Silver Dollar, the US Mint features a left-profile bust of Lady Liberty. Designed by Anthony de Francisci, Liberty is shown wearing a radiant crown, symbolizing hope for peace in the years following World War I. The design also features the national motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” and the year of issue.

Reverse

The reverse of the 1935 Peace Dollar displays an American bald eagle resting on an olive branch, designed by de Francisci. This powerful image reflects the country’s yearning for peace after the Great War. The eagle sits calmly, gazing toward rays of light on the horizon, which represent hope for a peaceful future.

History

The Peace Silver Dollar was introduced under the authority of the Pittman Act of 1918, which required the melting down of silver dollars for sale as silver bullion to Great Britain. The 1935 Peace Dollar marks the final year of issue, with 1.576 million coins struck by the Philadelphia Mint and 1.964 million by the San Francisco Mint.
