Obverse

The obverse of the 1883 Morgan Dollar features a detailed portrait of Lady Liberty. Designed by George T. Morgan in 1878, this image shows Liberty in left-profile relief, wearing a Phrygian cap, a laurel wreath, and a coronet crown. The 13 stars surrounding her represent the original states.

Reverse

The reverse side of the 1883 Morgan Silver Dollar displays the heraldic eagle design by Morgan. The eagle has its wings spread wide and clutches arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other, symbolizing the strength and peace that the United States represents.

History

In 1883, around 28 million Morgan Silver Dollars were minted for circulation. Philadelphia led production with 12.29 million coins, followed by New Orleans with 8.725 million and San Francisco with 6.25 million coins. The Carson City Mint added another 1.204 million coins.
