Obverse
On the obverse side of the 1877-S $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle, you will find a bust of Lady Liberty. This left-profile relief was designed by James B. Longacre in 1849, showing Liberty wearing a coronet crown and surrounded by stars, with the date at the bottom.
Reverse
The reverse of the 1877-S Pre-33 Liberty Double Eagle Coins features the Type III design. This includes a majestic bald eagle with the US national shield, along with arrows of war and an olive branch symbolizing peace. The eagle’s wings stretch wide, connected by sunrays, with a ring of 13 stars overhead.
History
The 1877 release of Liberty Gold Double Eagles is notable for the introduction of the Type III reverse design. The US Mint previously modified the original (Type I) reverse in 1866 to include the national motto IN GOD WE TRUST, resulting in the Type II design. The Type III debuted in 1877 with the denomination changed to read TWENTY DOLLARS instead of TWENTY D.
