Product Description

The Perth Mint introduced the Platinum Platypus Series in 2011, shining a spotlight on one of Australias most fascinating animals. These coins were produced until 2018, starting with the release of the 1 oz Australian Platinum Platypus Coin. Right now, 2011 1 oz Australian Platinum Platypus Coins are available from BGASC.

Highlights:

  • Ships in protective plastic!
  • First release in the Platinum Platypus Series!
  • Limited mintage of just 30,000 coins!
  • Contains 1 Troy oz of .9995 pure platinum.
  • Bears a face value of $100 (AUD), fully backed by the Australian government.
  • The obverse showcases a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.
  • The reverse depicts a platypus swimming in its natural habitat.

Each 2011 1 oz Australian Platinum Platypus Coin is housed in protective plastic to ensure its pristine condition. This 2011 coin marked the start of the Platinum Platypus Series and had a limited mintage of 30,000 coins, making it the highest-minted coin in the collection. From 2013 to 2018, the Perth Mint allowed unlimited mintages, but none of the later coins matched the popularity of the inaugural release.

Obverse

On the obverse of the 2011 Australian Platinum Platypus Coin, youll find a right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. This design by Ian Rank-Broadley was first introduced in 1998 and highlights Her Majesty wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara.

Reverse

The reverse side of the 2011 Platinum Platypus Coin features a design of the platypus swimming gracefully underwater. Native to Australia, these unique creatures thrive in clean river ecosystems where they feed on insects, worms, and small crustaceans.

History

The platypus is one of natures most unusual mammals, featuring characteristics of both mammals and reptiles. Male platypuses also have venomous spurs on their hind legs, which they use in territorial disputes during the breeding season. While their venom isnt life-threatening to humans, it can cause intense pain and swelling.
