Product Description

The HMS Bounty was a modest merchant ship acquired by the Royal Navy in 1787 for a unique mission: transporting breadfruit plants from Tahiti to the West Indies. Under Lieutenant William Blighs command, the ship was outfitted to carry its precious cargo and set sail from England in December 1787 with a crew of 46 sailors. Though it started as an unremarkable ship, the HMS Bounty would later become an enduring legend. Now, 2025 1/2 oz Pitcairn Islands Silver Bounty Coins are available online from BGASC.

Highlights:

  • Ships in protective plastic flips!
  • 2nd release in the Pitcairn Islands Bounty Series!
  • Limited mintage of just 10,000 coins!

Obverse

The obverse of the 2025 Pitcairn Islands Silver Bounty Coin highlights a portrait of King Charles III, marking his first official coinage appearance. Created by Jody Clark, this left-facing portrait of the monarch excludes a crown, reflecting a modern and unique design choice.

Reverse

On the reverse of the 2025 1/2 oz Silver Bounty Coin, youll find the HMS Bounty. Originally named Bethia, the ship was renamed after being acquired by the Royal Navy. At just 91 feet long, the HMS Bounty was typical of the small merchant ships of its time and would go on to become an iconic symbol in maritime history.

History

The HMS Bountys maiden voyage for the Royal Navy is most remembered for the infamous mutiny that occurred near the Friendly Islands. Discontent among the crew and harsh treatment by Lieutenant Bligh led to open rebellion. The mutineers, under the leadership of Fletcher Christian, showed restraint uncommon in such situations by sparing Bligh and his loyalists. Instead of execution, they were set adrift in a small 23-foot launch to fend for themselves.
