1878 7TF Morgan Silver Dollar Coin PCGS MS63
Product Description
When the Morgan Silver Dollar first launched, four US Mint branches took part in its production: Philadelphia, New Orleans, Carson City, and San Francisco. The first Morgans made in 1878 were called 8TF coins, named for the eagles eight tail feathers. Shortly after, the design was changed to show seven tail feathers instead. The 1878 7TF Morgan Silver Dollar Coins offered here have received a Mint State 63 grade. Coins in this grade typically show moderate mint luster, several small marks, and possibly a few larger blemishes. Fine hairlines may also be visible to the naked eye. After producing fewer than 750,000 of the 8TF coins, the Mint transitioned to the 7TF design and increased output during the first year of the Morgan series.
Obverse
The obverse of 1878 7TF Morgan Silver Dollars features George T. Morgans portrait of Liberty. Shown facing left, Liberty wears a Phrygian cap, a laurel wreath, and a coronet inscribed with “Liberty.” Thirteen stars frame the image, representing the original American colonies.
Reverse
On the reverse of the 1878 7TF Morgan Dollar, Morgans design features a bold heraldic eagle. The eagle appears with wings outspread, clutching arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other, symbolizing strength and peace.
History
Morgan Dollar mintages varied from year to year, impacted by factors like the Sherman Silver Purchase Act of 1890, which briefly boosted production before its repeal. Scarcer issues, such as the 1889-CC and 1893-S Morgan Dollars, resulted from lower outputs and are now considered key dates.
