In 1883, Philadelphia produced the most Morgan Dollars, making up more than 43% of the years total output.

Obverse

The obverse of the 1883 Morgan Dollar shows the iconic portrait of Liberty created by Morgan. Liberty is presented with loose, flowing hair and a confident gaze, setting a more uniquely American style apart from the European influences of earlier U.S. coin designs.

Reverse

On the reverse side of 1883 Morgan Silver Dollars, youll find Morgans heraldic eagle design. The bald eagle is depicted with its wings raised high, gripping arrows and an olive branch. A wreath wraps around the eagles lower half, symbolizing honor and peace.

History

The Morgan Dollar features an inspiring image of Liberty. She is shown in left-profile, wearing a Phrygian cap decorated with cotton and wheat as a nod to America’s farming heritage. Morgan modeled Liberty after Anna Willess Williams, a schoolteacher from Philadelphia whose classic profile made her the perfect choice for this American coin.
