Product Description

During the early production of the Morgan Silver Dollar, four branches of the U.S. Mint were responsible for striking coins for circulation. These branches were located in Philadelphia, New Orleans, Carson City, and San Francisco. Today, BGASC has 1882-S Morgan Silver Dollar Coins available for purchase.

Highlights:

  • Arrives in a protective plastic slab!
  • 5th coin in the Morgan Dollar Series!
  • Final mintage of 9,250,000 coins at San Francisco!
  • Contains .7734 Troy oz of actual silver content.
  • Bears a face value of $1 (USD) backed by the federal government.
  • Issued a Grade of Mint State 66 by the Professional Coin Grading Service.
  • Obverse depicts Lady Liberty.
  • Reverse features the heraldic eagle.
  • Comes with an S mint mark from the San Francisco Mint.

Each 1882-S Morgan Silver Dollar available here comes with a Mint State 66 grade from PCGS. These coins offer above-average mint luster with a few minor contact marks. A small number of hairlines might be seen when magnified. In 1882, San Francisco struck a total of 9.25 million Morgan Dollars, coming in just behind Philadelphias production and ahead of the totals at New Orleans and Carson City.

Obverse

The obverse side of the 1882-S Morgan Dollar presents a left-facing portrait of Liberty. Designed by George T. Morgan, Liberty wears a Phrygian cap, a wreath of laurel, and a coronet crown. Surrounding her image are 13 stars representing the original states.

Reverse

On the reverse of the 1882-S Morgan Silver Dollar, youll find a bald eagle featured with its wings fully extended. The eagle holds arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other, symbolizing both defense and peace.

History

The Morgan Silver Dollar owes its existence to the Bland-Allison Act of 1878. This act directed the U.S. Treasury to purchase between two and four million dollars’ worth of silver each month to create new coins, trying to balance the competing interests of silver mining states and those supporting a gold-based economy.
