In 1849, the US Mint began producing the $20 Double Eagle following the increase in gold supply brought on by the California Gold Rush. It was the last coin added to the Eagle Series, a line of gold coins dating back to 1795. The Liberty design was used for the majority of the Double Eagles time in circulation from 1850 to 1933. Each of these 1903-S $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagles is graded MS64+ by PCGS. Coins at this level have better-than-average eye appeal, a nice shine, and only minor signs of handling, such as light contact marks or hairlines.

Obverse

On the obverse, the coin shows a left-facing image of Lady Liberty. The artwork was created by James B. Longacre and was influenced by Christian Gobrechts earlier design. Liberty is seen wearing a coronet crown and surrounded by a ring of 13 stars.

Reverse

The reverse of the coin carries the Type III version of the Great Seal of the United States, a design that was introduced in 1877. It includes 13 stars above the seal, with the inscriptions IN GOD WE TRUST and TWENTY DOLLARS included in the design.

History

Prior to the Double Eagle, US gold coinage included the $10 Eagle, $5 Half Eagle, and $2.50 Quarter Eagle. While those were used in day-to-day commerce, the Double Eagle was often used for larger transactions and was an important coin in both domestic banking and overseas trade.
