Obverse

On the front side of the 2023 Morgan Dollar, Lady Liberty is shown in left-profile relief. She wears a Phrygian cap, along with a coronet and a laurel wreathrepresenting ideas of freedom and dignity.

Reverse

The reverse of the coin displays Morgans depiction of a heraldic eagle, wings fully spread. The eagle grips arrows and an olive branch in its talons, which are classic symbols of military strength and peaceful intent. This version excludes the national shield that often appears in other eagle designs.

History

The Morgan Dollar originally debuted in 1876, bringing back silver dollar production after a brief break. It replaced the Seated Liberty Dollar and was minted from 1878 to 1904, with one final release in 1921. The coin is named after its designer, George T. Morgan, who began his work at the US Mint in 1878 and became Chief Engraver in 1917, holding the position until 1925.
