The reverse of the coin presents a seated giant panda holding a bamboo shoot. This calm image reflects the species’ strong connection to bamboo, which is their primary source of food. Bamboo plants grow in cycles and can suddenly disappear from panda habitats for decades, making survival difficult during those times.

History

Despite their classification as carnivores, pandas eat almost nothing but bamboo. Their bodies have adapted to handle this unique diet, with specialized features like pseudo-thumbs for grasping stalks and strong jaws to chew tough plant material. Pandas need to consume between 26 and 84 pounds of bamboo daily to maintain their energy.
