Obverse

On the obverse side, the medal shows symbols representing each nation. The Great Wall of China is seen on the left, and on the right is the Smithsonian Institution museum in Washington, D.C. The design reflects the cooperation between the two countries.

Reverse

The reverse side of the medal features Mei Xiang cradling her cub, Bao Bao. Bao Bao, born in August 2013, quickly became a favorite among zoo-goers. Her name, meaning precious or treasure, was chosen through a naming event that included public participation.

History

The medal spotlights Mei Xiang, a well-known Giant Panda who arrived at the Smithsonian National Zoo in 2000. Born in 1998, she became famous for raising several cubsan accomplishment that is rare among pandas in captivity. Known for her gentle personality and strong maternal care, Mei Xiang captured the hearts of many zoo visitors.
