Dating back to 1535, the Mexican Mint is the oldest operating mint in the Western Hemisphere. It was first used to make coins for the Spanish colonies and now serves as Mexicos official mint. Since 1981, it has produced the Gold Libertad, one of Mexicos most recognized bullion coins. BGASC is pleased to offer the 2012 1 oz Mexican Gold Libertad Coin.

Each of these coins ships in a protective plastic flip. What makes the 2012 release stand out is that the Mexican Mint issued only the 1 oz version of the Gold Libertad. It marked the first time since the year 2000 that fractional-ounce coins were left out of the series.

Obverse

On the obverse, youll see Mexicos national coat of arms. The central image shows a golden eagle eating a snake while standing on a cactus. This modern symbol is surrounded by 10 older versions of the emblem, including one drawn from the 1524 Codex Mendoza.

Reverse

The reverse design features Victory standing at the top of the Independence Column. In the background, the volcanoes Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl add a scenic view behind the angels outstretched wings.

History

The reverse highlights Winged Victory, commonly called the Angel of Independence. This statue stands on a column along the Paseo de la Reforma in Mexico City. It was built to honor the 100th anniversary of the countrys fight for independence and shows the Greek goddess Nike holding a wreath and broken chains.
