Obverse

The obverse of the coin shows the official seal of Mexico. This includes a left-facing golden eagle perched atop a cactus, wings spread as it confronts a serpent with its beak and talons. Oak and laurel branches create a wreath along the base of the design.

On the reverse of the coin, there is a portrait of President Benito Juarez. He died on July 18, 1872, from a heart attack at the National Palace while in office for his fourth presidential term. His death was a major moment in Mexicos political story, and he is remembered as a key figure in the nations republican ideals.

History

Born in 1806 in Oaxaca, Benito Jurez came from humble beginnings as a member of the Zapotec Indigenous community. He overcame many social barriers to become a lawyer and eventually President of Mexico. His leadership through the Reform War and resistance to French occupation helped shape modern Mexico.
