The earliest examples featured gold gathered from placer deposits found in riverbeds and streams. As mining developed, later coins used gold mined from hydraulic and hard rock sources. Obverse

On the obverse of 1902-S $20 Liberty Double Eagle Coins is a profile of Lady Liberty. This image, designed by James B. Longacre, shows Liberty facing left, wearing a coronet marked with the word Liberty. The design is surrounded by 13 stars, representing the original states.

Reverse

The reverse of the 1902-S Pre-33 Liberty Gold Double Eagle features the Great Seal of the United States. The bald eagle is shown with a shield, olive branch, and arrows. A ring of stars and the motto are above the eagle. This Type III version also includes the denomination written out as TWENTY DOLLARS.

History

San Francisco Double Eagles became widely used in global trade, especially in Asia. Their dependable gold content made them a popular choice, often preferred over regional currency. In 1902, San Francisco produced the bulk of that years $20 gold coins, minting more than 1.75 million, while Philadelphias output was much smaller at just over 31,000.
