Product Description

The Canadian Gold Maple Leaf is a respected gold bullion coin released annually by the Royal Canadian Mint. First launched in 1979, this series is one of the oldest gold coin programs in the world. It includes a variety of sizes and has also been produced in multiple precious metals. BGASC currently offers 1985 1/4 oz Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coins for purchase.

Highlights:

  • Comes with a protective plastic flip!
  • 4th issue of 1/4 oz Gold Maple Leafs!
  • Final mintage of 609,200 coins!
  • Contains 1/4 Troy oz of .9999 pure gold.
  • The face value of $10 (CAD) is fully backed by the Canadian government.
  • On the obverse is an early bust of Queen Elizabeth II.
  • The reverse features the sugar maple leaf.

Each 1985 1/4 oz Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coin comes in a plastic flip for protection. These coins are struck in .9999 fine gold, with the series becoming the first major bullion coin to offer this purity level starting in 1982.

Obverse

On the obverse, the coin showcases Arnold Machins portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The image shows a young Queen and was originally created for coins in the United Kingdom. This design debuted on Canadian Maple Leafs in 1979 and was used through the end of the 1980s before being replaced by a Canadian-designed portrait.

Reverse

The reverse side includes a detailed image of the sugar maple leaf, which is Canadas national symbol. Walter Ott created this artwork in 1979 specifically for the Gold Maple Leaf and it remains the standard design used across the entire Maple Leaf bullion series, including silver, platinum, and palladium coins.

History

The Maple Leaf Series started in 1979 with just the 1 oz coin. In 1982, the 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz coins were added to the lineup, and other sizes followed in later years. These early coins feature a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II that was created in 1965 by Arnold Machin. This design was the last time a Canadian coin would feature a Queens portrait by a British artist.
