Design

History

In the Roman numeral system, the letter M means one thousand. The term comes from the Latin word mille. M is the highest value in the basic system, and repeating it increases the number (MM = 2000, MMM = 3000). For numbers over 3999, the Romans used special line systems to multiply by 1000. Today, Roman numerals are still used, especially in references to years, such as MCMXC for 1990.
