Each 2001 1 oz Chinese Gold Panda Coin arrives sealed in its original packaging. The 2001 release was important for two reasons. It was the first to feature higher face values, moving from 100 Yuan in previous years to 500 Yuan on the 2001 issue. It was also the only year when the panda design appeared twice, returning on the 2002 coins.

Obverse

The obverse side of the 2001 Chinese Gold Panda shows the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests. This iconic structure has appeared on every coin since the series began in 1982. It is part of the Temple of Heaven complex in Beijing, which was finished in 1420.

Reverse

For the reverse of the 2001 1 oz Gold Panda Coin, the design features a new panda image created just for this release. This years artwork shows a Giant Panda among bamboo, continuing the series tradition of changing designs each year to highlight this beloved animal.

History

Giant pandas have a unique combination of traits suited to their diet and habitat. Their black-and-white fur blends well with forest shadows, while powerful jaws and flat molars help them chew through bamboo. They even have a special pseudo-thumb, a modified wrist bone that acts like a thumb for grabbing bamboo.
