Starting in 1986, the proof coin became an annual release. Over time, the series grew to include more sizes, offering options beyond the original 1 oz coin. Each 2025 1 oz Proof Mexican Silver Libertad comes in a capsule and features a proof finish, with frosted designs and mirror-like backgrounds. The 1 oz proof version was first released in 1983 and has been part of the annual series since 1986.

Obverse

On the obverse of the 2025 1 oz Proof Silver Libertad, you’ll find Mexicos national coat of arms. This shows a golden eagle holding a snake in its beak and talon while perched on a cactus. Around the main design, there are 10 earlier versions of this symbol featured in a ring. These extra details are only found on the 1 oz, 2 oz, and 5 oz coins.

Reverse

The reverse of the coin displays Winged Victory, a statue that stands atop the Independence Victory Column in Mexico City. The background includes the famous volcanoes Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl, offering a scenic view behind the statue.

History

Back in the colonial period, Spanish rulers adapted the Aztec eagle and serpent symbol to reflect European traditions. These revised designs added crowns, shields, and coats of arms to convey authority and align with Christian beliefs.
