The Mexican Mints Silver Libertad series made its debut in 1982 with the 1 oz silver BU coin. In 1983, a proof version followed, and starting in 1986, these proof coins became an annual tradition. Each 2025 2 oz Proof Mexican Silver Libertad is presented in a plastic capsule and includes traditional proof visuals. These coins feature sharp, frosted images placed on highly polished, reflective backgrounds. In 2025, the Mexican Mint made substantial cuts to the mintage of Mexican Silver Libertads and opted not to issue any 2025 Mexican Gold Libertads. The mintage numbers for all BU Silver Libertads are at record lows for the series, a decision likely to result in increased rarity for this years coins.

Obverse

On the obverse, youll see the present-day Mexican coat of arms. A golden eagle appears in mid-struggle with a serpent, perched atop a cactus. This central image is ringed by ten past versions of the national seal, which also appear on the 1 oz and 5 oz proof coins.

Reverse

The reverse side of the 2025 2 oz Proof Libertad displays Winged Victory. This figure stands on the Mexican Independence Victory Column. Behind her, the volcanoes Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl add scenic depth to the design.

History

The obverse of each Libertad Coin includes the official Mexican coat of arms. This design has roots in the Codex Mendoza, a 16th-century document that recorded Aztec culture. Because it was produced under Spanish rule, the artwork reflects a blend of indigenous imagery and European influences, creating a lasting national emblem.
