Over the years, the base of the trophy has been modified, most notably in 2014, when the engraved names of winners began to be placed in a spiral arrangement. At present, the real trophy can only hold winners names until 2038, suggesting that a new design will eventually be required.

History

The original FIFA World Cup trophy, known as the Jules Rimet Trophy, was created for the 1930 competition in Uruguay. It was named after FIFAs third president, who helped establish the global tournament. French sculptor Abel Lafleur crafted the trophy, which depicted Nike, the Greek goddess of victory, lifting a cup. The trophy stood about 14 inches tall and rested on a marble base.
