2010 1/2 oz Australian Gold Year of the Tiger Coin (Series ll)
Product Description
The Perth Mint launched the Australian Lunar Series II collection in 2008 as the follow-up to its highly successful Lunar Series I program. Like the original, this series celebrates the animals of the Chinese zodiac in a repeating 12-year cycle, releasing a new design each year. Lunar Series II offered improved detailing, strong collector demand, and more options across both silver and gold coins. At this time, 2010 1/2 oz Australian Gold Year of the Tiger Coins from Lunar Series II are available from BGASC.
Highlights:
- Comes with an acrylic capsule!
- 3rd year of release in the Lunar Series II program!
- Honors the Year of the Tiger!
- Final mintage of only 9,781 coins!
- Contains 1/2 troy oz of .9999 pure gold.
- The face value of $50 (AUD) is backed by the Australian government.
- On the obverse is the fourth-generation bust of Elizabeth II.
- The reverse features the head of a tiger in front-facing relief.
Each 2010 1/2 oz Australian Gold Year of the Tiger Coin is housed inside an acrylic capsule for protection. This release is also known for its relatively low mintage, with only 9,781 coins sold in total. Among the gold Tiger issues from 2010, only the largest versions (2 oz, 10 oz, 1 kilo, and 10 kilo) ended with lower sales numbers, giving the 1/2 oz coin an added scarcity factor compared to many other sizes.
Obverse
On the obverse of the 2010 Australian Gold Year of the Tiger Coin is the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. This portrait shows the Queen facing right and wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara. The inscriptions around the design provide the official details of the coin, including the issuing nation, the monarchs name, the year of issue, the coins specifications, and its $50 AUD face value.
Reverse
The reverse of the 2010 1/2 oz Gold Year of the Tiger Coin features a detailed image of a tigers head shown from the front. The design captures the sharp facial structure and alert expression of the animal, reflecting its traditional symbolism of strength and boldness. Fine texture is visible throughout the fur and facial features, giving the artwork a realistic look that stands out as one of the more striking designs from the early years of Lunar Series II.
History
The 2010 1/2 oz Australian Gold Year of the Tiger Coin honors the Tiger, the third animal in the Lunar Series II zodiac sequence. Produced from .9999 fine gold, the coin delivers a solid half-ounce gold weight while still being smaller and easier to collect than the larger sizes offered in the series. This makes it an appealing choice for buyers who want a respected Perth Mint release with both bullion value and collectible interest.
