Product Description

Among the Ojibwe (Chippewa) people, the dream catcher is called asabikeshiinh, meaning spider, a nod to Asibikaashi, the spider woman said to care for and protect the people. This Proof Silver Dream Catcher Coin honors that heritage and introduces a striking cut-out minting feature, leaving open spaces inside the web portion of the design. Right now, 2026 1 oz Proof Sioux Nation Silver Dream Catcher Coins are available through BGASC.

Obverse

The obverse design of the 2026 Proof Sioux Nation Silver Dream Catcher Coin showcases a traditional dream catcher. The web at its center is brought to life with a special cut-out process that creates real openings inside the coin. Classic dream catchers were handcrafted from natural materials, including willow hoops and woven fibers, often decorated with feathers and beads that represent air, breath, and the web of life.

Reverse

On the reverse of the coin, the dream catcher web is seen from the opposite side and remains open due to the cut-out minting. Below the web sits the Oglala Lakota Sioux coat of arms. In dream catcher symbolism, the circle reflects the suns daily movement and lifes ongoing rhythm, while a single feather provides a smooth path for good dreams to reach the dreamer.

History

Stories from the Ojibwe say that as families traveled and settled farther away, Asibikaashi could not reach every child each night. In response, mothers and grandmothers began weaving dream catchers from willow hoops. The web was meant to trap bad dreams and negative thoughts, while the center opening allowed good dreams to slip through and fall softly to the sleeping child. By sunrise, unwanted dreams were believed to be cleared away by the light.
