Obverse
The obverse of the 2026 British Silver Loch Ness Monster Coin features King Charles III. Shown in left-profile relief, the portrait was designed by Martin Jennings and debuted in 2022. The effigy presents the King without a crown, offering a simple and modern appearance that matches the current era of British coinage.
Reverse
On the reverse of the 2026 1 oz British Silver Loch Ness Monster Coin is a detailed depiction of the Loch Ness Monster emerging from the water. Many descriptions portray Nessie as a large creature with a long neck and small head, similar to the prehistoric plesiosaur. The design also reflects the scale of Loch Ness, which stretches over 23 miles and reaches depths of more than 750 feet. These dark and deep waters have helped keep the legend alive, making the loch one of Scotlands most famous natural landmarks.
History
Reports of a mysterious creature in the waters near Loch Ness have been passed down for generations. One of the oldest references comes from 565 AD, when Saint Columba was believed to have witnessed a strange animal in the River Ness. While the story remained mostly local for many centuries, it began to gain broader attention in the early 1930s. Road construction along the loch made the area easier to reach, and more visitors soon began sharing their own accounts. After a 1933 article in the Inverness Courier helped spread the story, the Loch Ness Monster became a topic of international interest. Over the decades, researchers have conducted many studies in the loch, including sonar searches in the 1970s and 1980s. In 2018, a DNA study of the water found high levels of eel DNA, leading to theories that some sightings may have been caused by unusually large eels.
