In honor of the 35th anniversary of the American Silver Eagle, the United States Mint introduced an updated look for the series in 2021. That year featured both the original reverse from John Mercanti and a new Type 2 reverse designed by Emily Damstra. This marked the first time two different reverse designs were released in a single year. The Mint also implemented additional security upgrades across its major bullion programs. Certified 2021 1 oz American Silver Eagle Coins are now available from BGASC.

Each coin listed here has received a Mint State 70 grade from PCGS. MS70 coins display full mint brilliance and no visible imperfections. These coins are secured in protective slabs and include the standard PCGS Blue Label often associated with top-graded bullion releases.

Obverse

The obverse of the 2021 American Silver Eagle Type 2 Coin continues to feature Adolph A. Weinmans Walking Liberty. Liberty is shown moving toward the sunrise, draped in the American flag. As part of the update, Weinmans AW initials now appear in the lower-right area of the design.

Reverse

On the reverse of the 2021 1 oz Silver Eagle Type 2 Coin is a detailed image of a bald eagle in flight with an oak branch. Emily Damstra designed this new reverse after the Mint reviewed more than 30 design submissions. It replaced the original heraldic eagle that had defined the series for decades.

History

The 2021 release is notable because it bridges two eras of design. Early-year coins continued the long-running reverse that had been in place since 1986. Beginning around July 2021, the Mint transitioned to the new bald eagle reverse, creating a clear distinction between Type 1 and Type 2 coins.
