The year 2021 marked a transition for the United States Mints American Eagle gold and silver coins. Partway through the year, the Mint introduced new reverse designs for both metals, creating two separate versions of the 2021 Silver Eagle. One version retained the original reverse artwork, while the other debuted a newly approved image. This 2-Coin Designer Set includes both versions in a reverse proof finish. These sets are certified by NGC and come with the classic Blue Label in each slab. Both coins hold a PF70 grade, indicating flawless condition with full mint luster. First Day of Issue coins were submitted for grading within 24 hours of the Mints release. The reverse proof finish features mirrored devices and frosted fields for added contrast.

Obverse

Walking Liberty appears on the obverse of both coins in this set. Designed by Adolph A. Weinman in 1916, the image originally appeared on the Walking Liberty Half Dollar and remains a central feature of the Silver Eagle series today.

Reverse

The reverse artwork differs between the two coins in the set. The Type 1 coin shows John Mercantis heraldic eagle design. The Type 2 coin features the newer bald eagle in flight, designed by Emily Damstra.

History

The new reverse design was chosen in 2020 after a review of more than 35 design proposals. Emily Damstras flying eagle concept was selected for its modern look and detailed execution. She has worked with both the Royal Canadian Mint and the United States Mint and participates in the Artistic Infusion Program.
