In 2021, the United States Mint updated the reverse designs of the American Eagle Silver and Gold Coins. This resulted in two different reverse styles for the 2021 American Silver Eagle release: one featuring the original artwork and another showcasing the newly introduced design. To commemorate this milestone, the mint offered a 2-Coin Designer Set that includes both versions in reverse proof. These coins are housed together in a protective two-coin slab with a dual-core insert that enhances the contrast of the reverse proof finish. A PR70 grade from PCGS confirms that the coins have full mint brilliance and no visible imperfections. The First Strike designation means the coins were graded within 30 days of their official release.

Obverse

On the obverse of each coin in the 2021 Reverse Proof American Silver Eagle 2-Coin Designer Set is Adolph A. Weinmans Walking Liberty image. First introduced in 1916 on the Walking Liberty Half Dollar, the design has remained a central feature of the American Silver Eagle series.

Reverse

The reverse designs differ between the two coins in this set. The Type 1 coin features John Mercantis heraldic eagle, while the Type 2 coin displays Emily Damstras new soaring bald eagle design introduced in 2021.

History

The new reverse was chosen in 2020 after the United States Mint reviewed more than 35 design submissions. Emily Damstras depiction of a bald eagle flying with an oak branch was ultimately selected. Damstra has worked with both the Royal Canadian Mint and the United States Mint and is part of the Artistic Infusion Program.
