The Australian Nugget series began in 1986 as Australias official gold bullion coin program, giving investors worldwide access to government-backed gold coins from The Perth Mint. Early designs focused on some of the most notable gold nuggets discovered in Australian history. In 1989, the series transitioned to the Australian Kangaroo, changing the reverse to showcase the countrys signature wildlife symbol. To celebrate 40 years in 2026, The Perth Mint reintroduces the original nugget theme in a special anniversary release. The obverse of the 2026 1 oz Silver 40th Anniversary of the Australian Nugget Coin shows King Charles III in left-profile. The portrait was created by Dan Thorne and reflects the modern tradition of portraying the monarch without a crown on Australian coins.

Reverse

The reverse of the 2026 Australian Silver 40th Anniversary of the Australian Nugget Coin presents the Welcome Stranger nugget, based on Stuart Devlins original series artwork. Found in 1869 in Victoria by John Deason and Richard Oates, the nugget remains unmatched in size. The design illustrates its rugged shape with radiating lines and a subtle map of Australia in the background.

History
