The Aztec Sun Stone remains one of the most recognizable designs from ancient history. Its detailed imagery and cultural importance make it a popular feature on precious metal rounds for collectors who enjoy historical themes and meaningful designs. Produced in silver, gold, and copper, these rounds offer a close representation of the original carved stone. Each piece provides both intrinsic metal value and a connection to the legacy of the Aztec civilization. Today, 2 oz SilverTowne Aztec Calendar Silver Rounds are available at BGASC.

  • Includes a detailed depiction of the Aztec Calendar Stone!
  • Made in the United States!

Obverse

The obverse of the SilverTowne Aztec Calendar Silver Round displays the intricate design of the Sun Stone. Originally carved from a large piece of basalt, the image highlights both artistic and cultural elements. At the center is Tonatiuh, shown with a tongue shaped like a sacrificial blade. Surrounding him are four panels that represent earlier world ages. Around these is a ring with the twenty named days of the ritual calendar. The outer portion includes decorative symbols, celestial imagery, and solar patterns, all framed by two fire serpents.

Reverse

On the reverse of the 2 oz Aztec Calendar Silver Round is a right-facing image of Emperor Cuauhtemoc. He became the ruler of the Aztec Empire in 1520 and was the final tlatoani, as well as a relative of Moctezuma II. During the Spanish conquest led by Hernan Cortes, Cuauhtemoc led efforts to defend Tenochtitlan. Despite strong resistance, the city fell. He was captured in 1521 and later executed by the Spanish in 1525.

History

The exact role of the Aztec Sun Stone has been widely studied over time. While it is often called a calendar, most experts now believe it served a more ceremonial purpose. It is thought to represent Aztec beliefs about the cosmos, especially the idea of the fifth sun, which marks the current age. The design also reflects the connection between the Aztec people and their sun god, Tonatiuh.
