  • America the Beautiful (ATB) 5 oz Silver Coins at BGASC

The most popular silver coin series from the US Mint is their American Silver Eagle collection. However, their America the Beautiful series which ran from 2010 to 2021 is arguably their most unique. Even though the series is over, this 56-coin collection is still an immensely popular option. Learn more about America the Beautiful 5 oz Silver Coins, right here at BGASC.

    Background on ATB Coins

The US Mint created a 50 State Quarters program in 1997. These coins featured unique reverse designs based on the 50 states. The overall popularity led to the US Mint adding the District of Columbia and US Territories to the series. It also led to the creation of the ATB series a little over a decade later.

The 50 State Quarter program served as the basis for the ATB 5 oz Silver Coin series. These 5 oz silver coins are made from .999 pure silver and feature 56 coins in total. Coins were first issued in 2010 with 5 being released each year, and one final one in 2021.

    Selection Process

The governor of each state submitted four locations, in order of preference, to be featured for their state. The US Mint, along with the Secretary of the Interior, each jurisdiction’s chief executive, and the Secretary of the Treasury, choose which of the four is to be featured, based on several factors.

    Different Types of ATB Coins

    • BU: The main line of ATB Coins is their 5 oz .999 pure silver BU coins. These BU coins are without a mint mark, and are available in individual capsules, mint tubes of 10, or Monster Boxes of 100.
    • Burnished: Burnished coins are polished before they’re struck, giving them a matte finish. Burnished coins are sold individually, and do bear a “P” mint mark, indicating that they’re produced at the Philadelphia Mint.
    • Collectible: The US Mint also offers sets of collectible coins. This can include 5-coin sets of proof strikes, featuring all 5 unique releases from a calendar year. The US Mint has also struck colorized coins in the series that display a thin layer of colorized lacquer on the reverse field.
