The American Platinum Eagle series made its debut in 1997 with the release of both Brilliant Uncirculated and Proof coins, following the same structure used for the Gold and Silver Eagle programs. From the very beginning, the Proof Platinum Eagle offered something different. Rather than using a single reverse design, the Proof coins feature a new reverse each year, adding variety to the series. Obverse

The obverse of the 1/10 oz Proof American Platinum Eagle Coin features the Statue of Liberty, designed by John Mercanti. Created specifically for this series, the design has appeared on all BU Platinum Eagles since 1997 and was also used on Proof issues through 2017.

Reverse

Reverse designs on the 1/10 oz Proof Platinum Eagle vary by year. From 1997 through 2008, each Proof coin showcased a different image. The first release featured Thomas D. Rogers bald eagle in flight, followed by additional designs depicting the eagle soaring across different American landscapes from 1998 to 2002.

History

The American Platinum Eagle differs from the Gold and Silver Eagle series due to changes in its production over time. Early releases included fractional sizes such as 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz in both Proof and Brilliant Uncirculated formats through 2008. Production of fractional Platinum Eagles ended after that year. Additionally, Brilliant Uncirculated Platinum Eagles were not available from 2009 through 2013, returning as a yearly issue beginning in 2016.
