On November 23, 1942, a pair of torpedoes launched by a Japanese submarine struck the S.S. Tilawa in the Indian Ocean. Known to many as the Indian Titanic, the ship sank nearly 9,200 feet below sea level, taking with it 280 lives and over 2,300 silver bars. This 1/4 oz S.S. Tilawa Shipwreck Silver Grain is sealed in a plastic holder from PCGS, which verifies that the silver comes from the Tilawas recovered cargo. The label inside the slab shows the weight and marks it as silver grain. On the reverse of the label, youll find information like the specs, certification data, and a symbol representing the ship. Only 1,942 of these were certified, honoring the year of the sinking.

History

The Tilawa was on its way to South Africa with a large shipment of silver when it was sunk during World War II. That silver, valued at about $43 million today, was meant to be turned into coins. The wreck was discovered in 2014 and recovered in 2017. After years of legal debate, a 2024 ruling by the UK Supreme Court granted South Africa legal claim to the silver.

Most of the recovered silver has since been refined into modern bullion products with .999 purity. These 1/4 oz grains offer a meaningful link to the Tilawas story, allowing collectors and history buffs to own a small piece of a long-overlooked event from the war.
