The SS Tilawa, often referred to as the “Indian Titanic,” was a passenger ship that met a tragic fate during World War II. It was struck by Japanese torpedoes while sailing from Bombay, India, to Durban, South Africa, with a cargo of silver bars. In 2017, a recovery mission successfully salvaged nearly 60 tons of silver from the shipwreck. Now, 1/4 oz S.S. Tilawa Shipwreck Silver Rounds are available from BGASC.
Highlights:
- Ships in protective plastic flips, tubes of 20 rounds, or boxes of 800 rounds!
- Part of the Tilawa Shipwreck Silver Series!
- Minted using silver recovered from the wreck of the SS Tilawa!
- Contains 1/4 Troy oz of .999 pure silver.
- The obverse shows the SS Tilawa and its final voyage route.
- Reverse features the SS Tilawa at sea.
Each 1/4 oz SS Tilawa Shipwreck Silver Round comes in a protective plastic flip, a tube of 20, or a box of 800. These small rounds are part of the Tilawa Shipwreck Silver Series and are made from silver recovered from the ocean floor in 2017, after spending 76 years underwater.
Obverse
The obverse design of the S.S. Tilawa Shipwreck Silver Rounds shows the SS Tilawa on its final voyage. A bird’s-eye view of the ship is set against a map that charts its course from Bombay (now Mumbai) to Durban, South Africa, in 1942.
Reverse
On the reverse of 1/4 oz S.S. Tilawa Shipwreck Silver Rounds, you’ll see a different view of the SS Tilawa at sea, capturing the vessel during its last journey in November 1942.
History
The SS Tilawa Shipwreck Silver Series is a chance for collectors to own a piece of history. The SS Tilawa, a British India Steam Navigation Company liner, was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine in the Indian Ocean on November 23, 1942, while carrying passengers and silver bullion. Lost for decades, the wreck was located in 2014, and the silver was recovered three years later. This series includes rounds, bars, and grains made from the silver recovered, marking the ship’s final voyage and the recovery of its lost cargo.
