Unfortunately, the ship was struck by Japanese torpedoes and sank in the Indian Ocean, resulting in the tragic loss of many lives. Along with the passengers, 2,364 silver bars were lost to the depths. In 2017, after years underwater, 60 tons of this silver were recovered in a controversial salvage mission.
