Obverse

On the obverse, the Americas First Pope Silver Round displays a portrait of Pope Leo XIV. Born in the United States as Robert Francis Prevost, he is the first American chosen to lead the Roman Catholic Church. The image captures him at the moment of his first public appearance, hands clasped and wearing traditional papal robes.

Reverse

The reverse side of the round depicts Vatican City. Established in 1929, this independent city-state is home to important sites such as the Sistine Chapel and St. Peters Basilica. Vatican City also has its own radio station, postal service, and ceremonial guard known as the Swiss Guard, who wear distinctive uniforms and serve as protectors of the Pope.

History

The phrase Habemus Papam, or We have a Pope, is proclaimed after a new Pope has been elected. This declaration comes from the central balcony of St. Peters Basilica and is delivered by the Cardinal Protodeacon. It signals the conclusion of the papal Conclave, in which cardinals vote in private until one candidate secures a two-thirds majority.
