Product Description

The early 20th century saw the United States revitalize its major circulation coins. Between 1907 and 1909, the US penny and all four denominations of the US Eagle gold coins were redesigned by the United States Mint. With the Barber Coinage to be redesigned in 1916, the US nickel was redesigned in 1913. BGASC now has 1 oz Silver Buffalo Rounds available to you for purchase online.

Highlights:

  • Arrives with an individual protective plastic flip, tubes of 20 rounds, or boxes of 500 rounds!
  • Reproduces the historic Buffalo Nickel design from 1913 in pure silver!
  • Contains 1 Troy oz of .9999 pure silver.
  • On the obverse face of the round is the stoic indigenous figure.
  • The reverse captures the American bison in left-profile relief.

When you purchase these 1 oz Silver Buffalo Rounds, BGASC has the rounds available in brand-new condition with individual protective plastic flips to house the rounds. Each round comes with the exact designs created in 1913 by James Earle Fraser for the US Mint and featured on the Buffalo Nickel until 1938.

Obverse

On the obverse face of the 1 oz Silver Buffalo Round, you will find the image of a stoic indigenous tribal individual. This figure has braided hair that falls down the right side of his head as his gaze is fixed forward. There are feathers woven in his hair at the back of his head and the word Liberty inscribed in front of his face.

Reverse

The reverse side of 1 oz Silver Buffalo Rounds captures a design of the American bison in left-profile relief. The bison is commonly referred to as the buffalo in North America and was central to the culture and lifestyle of tribes from the Central and Western Plains of the United States. The design shown here was inspired by a real buffalo as Fraser used the figure of Black Diamond, a resident bison at the Central Park Zoo, to help shape his design for the Buffalo Nickel.

History

The Buffalo Nickel has gone down in American history as one of the most popular coin designs of the 20th century alongside Adolph A. Weinmans Walking Liberty and Augustus Saint-Gaudens Liberty images. The administration of President William Howard Taft approved the move to replace the Liberty Head Nickel design from Charles E. Barber in 1911 and Fraser developed his designs for the nickel in 1912. Though the designs were approved in 1912 by the government, objections from a private company that manufactured the mechanisms to detect slugs in nickel-operated machines delayed the coining of the new Buffalo Nickel until 1913. Ironically, the delay did not result in changes being made that satisfied the manufacturer. The US Mint moved on despite those objections.
