Each judge can award up to 25 points for the cowboys performance and up to 25 points for the horses effort. A ride only counts if the cowboy marks out correctly, starting with both spurs touching the horses shoulders when the horse makes its first jump from the chute. Riders are judged on their rhythm and control, while horses earn points for their bucking intensity and movement.

History

Bareback riding is often seen as rodeos most demanding event. A cowboy must stay on a bucking horse for eight seconds using just one hand on a leather rigging. The rigging, resembling a suitcase handle, is secured around the horses withers. The rider places his palm-up grip inside the handle, relying on his upper body and core strength to maintain balance. Without a saddle or reins, bareback riders depend entirely on timing, strength, and technique.
