Obverse

On the obverse, the American bison is featured prominently. Once nearly extinct by the late 1800s due to overhunting and government policies, the species dropped to fewer than 1,000 animals. Conservation work during the 20th century has helped restore their numbers, though most bison today live in managed herds on reserves and ranches.

Reverse

The reverse of the round presents the series common design: the skull and antlers of a white-tailed deer in front-facing relief. It also shows the mint and series name, along with the identifying hallmarks of the round.
