Design

In the obverse design of the SilverTowne Aztec Calendar Silver Bar, the full Sun Stone is presented with detailed features. This design reflects important elements of Aztec cosmology and religion. At the center is Tonatiuh, the sun god, surrounded by four panels representing previous ages of the world. Expanding outward are the 20 day-signs of the Aztec calendar, along with solar rays, symbols associated with wealth, and two fire serpents known as Xiuhcoatl that encircle the design. On the reverse of the SilverTowne Aztec Calendar Silver Bar, a portion of the same Sun Stone design appears, continuing the detailed pattern from the front.

History

After the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire in 1521, many important cultural items were hidden. Spanish rulers attempted to replace native traditions, and the Sun Stone was buried beneath the area that is now Mexico Citys central plaza, the Zcalo. It remained hidden for more than 250 years before being uncovered.
