History

Gold production in Western Australia began on a small scale in the late 1880s but boomed in the 1890s after big finds at Coolgardie and Kalgoorlie. During the peak years of the early gold rush, from the mid-1890s into the early 1900s, the fields surrounding Perth and beyond yielded hundreds of thousands of ounces of gold each year. The Golden Mile in Kalgoorlie became one of the richest areas of gold-bearing ore in the world, starting with alluvial mining and later moving to deeper, more advanced methods.
