Obverse
The obverse design on the 1870 Liberty Double Eagle shows Liberty in profile facing left. She wears a coronet, with 13 stars circling her head to represent the original colonies. The year of mintage appears at the bottom of the design.
Reverse
The reverse of the 1870 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle displays the Great Seal of the United States. The eagle faces forward with a shield across its chest, an olive branch in one talon, and arrows in the other. This Type II reverse includes the motto IN GOD WE TRUST above the eagle, and the denomination listed as TWENTY D.
History
These Liberty Head double eagles were struck from 1849 to 1907 at multiple facilities: Philadelphia, San Francisco, New Orleans, Carson City, and Denver. Output across the series totaled in the tens of millions, though mintages shifted over the decades with changing gold supplies and historical events. Certain years, such as the early 1860s, saw fewer coins due to the Civil War, while later years of western mining brought larger issues.
